State Champion
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kyle Schlumbohm took a gamble Friday in the Division II State Championship pole vault. The junior from Pemberville Eastwood had been following right behind Bellevue’s Matt Rowland through the entire tournament, and Schlumbohm knew it was going to take a big risk on a big stage to beat out the sophomore in the Redmen uniform.
With the bar set at 14–9 and Rowland with the clearance recorded for himself on only one attempt, Schlumbohm upped the ante and went for 15–0 as he passed on 14–9 — something that is rarely done. Reaching the height of 15–0 would’ve put himself ahead of Rowland as the Bellevue great failed his first attempt at the measurement. It was strategic, gutsy and smart, but the move didn’t pay off as the attempt failed, giving Rowland, the only sophomore in the history of Bellevue to do so, the Division II State Championship title in the pole vault.
