GALION — The Bellevue Lady Red remained undefeated in the month of January with a 56–47 road win over the Galion Lady Tigers on Tuesday in a non-league varsity girls basketball game.
The visiting Lady Red slowly but surely built a sizable 16-point lead in Tuesday’s game.
Bellevue held an eight-point lead, 30–22, at halftime before doubling that margin, 46–30, with a 16–8 edge in the third quarter. Galion posted a 17–10 advantage in the fourth quarter to shrink the final margin to single digits.
The win is Bellevue’s sixth in a row, pushing the team’s record to 12–2 overall. Galion dropped to 5–10.
Galion (14-for-16) outshot Bellevue (11-for-20) at the free-throw line Tuesday, 88 percent to 55.
“It was a rough night,” Bellevue coach Ryan Orshoski said about Tuesday’s game. “We had a lot of turnovers and a lot of plays to learn from.
“We talk about playing to our standard, and I don’t know if we played to our standard, but it’s a win.”
Bellevue sophomore Carly Santoro totaled 24 points in the win, while junior Makala Daniel tallied 10 points, and Hannah Lilly had eight.
Galion was led by Bailey Ruhe’s 18 points. Peyton Beachy added 14.
Orshoski described his team’s defensive approach against Galion.
“We wanted to take away Beachy with her threes. She’s an outstanding three-point shooter. We wanted to contain Bailey Ruhe, who is one of their better guards,” Orshoski said. “I thought both of those girls got their points, but it was after the game was determined.”
Orshoski commented on a couple players who stood out for the Lady Red offensively.
“Hannah Lilly did a great job handling the ball and getting to the basket,” he said. “Makala Daniel had a great game. She provided us a lot of points in the paint.”
Bellevue’s junior varsity managed a narrow 39–35 win over Galion.
The unbeaten Lady Red trailed by four at halftime, 17–13, and by six entering the fourth quarter, 29–23, but outscored Galion 16–6 in the final period to pull out the win.
Tara Rinner supplied 14 points for the Lady Red, followed by Jessica Zeitz with 11.
Kayla Laforest had 12 for Galion, while Raven Crawford notched 11.
Bellevue will host Willard on Saturday in Northern Ohio League play.
