Inaugural OHSAA wrestling tourney begins Wednesday
From staff reports
The inaugural Ohio High School Athletic Association Team Wrestling Tournament, a dual tournament for Ohio’s varsity wrestling programs, will begin Wednesday at select high schools throughout the state.
The purpose of the tournament is to conduct a statewide team tournament that crowns a true team champion in each division of Ohio high school wrestling, in a way that the OHSAA’s season-ending individual state wrestling tournament cannot. The tournament was approved by the OHSAA in 2010.
This inaugural single-elimination tournament is broken down into a three-day, three-round regional tournament (which will be held each of the next three Wednesdays) and a one-day, three-round state tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9.
For the purposes of the tournament, the OHSAA’s three divisions each are separated into eight regions, which are split geographically into A and B regions. The winners of each of the tournament’s regions will advance to compete at the state tournament at The Ohio State University’s St. John Arena in Columbus.
Each region is seeded, with the top four teams in each region receiving the option to host their respective region’s quarterfinals at their home venue.
Each team must fill at least eight weight classes in order to be eligible for the optional tournament.
Tickets for the regional quarterfinals and semifinals will cost $7, regional finals $8 and state tournament $10.
Bellevue to wrestle Edison
PERKINS — The Bellevue Redmen will wrestle the Edison Chargers in the Division II, Region 9-B quarterfinals Wednesday of the 2013 OHSAA Team Wrestling Tournament.
Bellevue and Edison will face off at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Perkins High School. The winner will advance to face the No. 2 seed in Region 9-B, the Perkins Pirates, with that dual match winner advancing to the Region 9-B semifinals of the tournament, to be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, at a site to be determined.
Bellevue is the 10th seed and Edison seventh in the Region 9-B’s 10-team field.
Edison beat Bellevue, 42–25, in a dual match earlier this season on Jan. 2.
The state-ranked Clyde Fliers, the No. 1 seed in Region 9-B, will host their portion of the region’s bracket and will face the winner of Rossford and Columbian on Wednesday.
The Margaretta Polar Bears, the No. 4 seed in Division III, Region 18-B, earned a bye and will face No. 5 seed New London at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Margaretta High School.
The Monroeville Eagles are the No. 10 seed in Region 18-B. They will face No. 7 seed Plymouth at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Huron High School.
