BOWLING GREEN — The first day of wrestling action was completed Friday in a Division II Northwest District sectional tournament at Stroh Center on the campus of Bowling Green State University. Action will continue today starting with semifinal matches in the winner’s bracket and competition for the top six spots in the consolation bracket.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the district tournament Feb. 2223.

The Bellevue Redmen scored 16 points as a team Friday, ranking 11th out of 13 teams.

Only one Bellevue wrestler, sophomore heavyweight Grant Moyer, remains in the winner’s bracket entering today’s action.

Moyer beat Bowling Green junior Timo Anderson in the quarterfinals Friday. Moyer will need one win today to secure a spot at districts.

Moyer, who entered the tournament with the second-most wins of any heavyweight, will wrestle St. Marys Memorial senior Logan Simons in his first match today. Simons won two matches Friday to move into the semifinals.

It’s a very winnable match,” Bellevue coach Paul Zolman said about Moyer’s semifinal match. “(Moyer) has faced opponents similar to (Simons) in the past. Hopefully (Moyer) will work hard and come away with the win.”

At 160 pounds, Bellevue senior Joe Magyar was pinned in 39 seconds by Wauseon junior Aaron Schuette in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Magyar will await the winner of the match between Rossford sophomore Andy Myers and Shelby junior Nate Durkovic today, two wins away from clinching a district spot.

At 120, Bellevue freshman Collin Adkins lost in the quarterfinals in his only match Friday. He is sitting in the consolation bracket, and after receiving a bye, awaits the winner of Perkins senior Nick Waldron and St. Marys Memorial freshman Keyton Liming. Adkins will need two wins today to qualify for districts.

In the 132-pound bracket, Bellevue senior Ryan Veliz pinned Sandusky junior Will Vanscoy in 33 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals, where Veliz lost by pin at 5:31 to Perkins junior Nate Boggs. Veliz will wrestle Port Clinton senior Robbie Peterman in the consolation bracket today. Veliz will need three wins to reach the district tournament.

At 126, after receiving a bye, Bellevue senior Zack Miller lost by pin at 1:24 to Wauseon senior Austin Yamell in the quarterfinals. Miller dropped to the consolation bracket, where he will face Eastwood senior Brandon Tefft today. Miller will need three wins to qualify for districts.

In the 152-pound bracket, Bellevue sophomore Alex Elswick topped Bowling Green freshman Kaleb O’Brien with a pin in 24 seconds. Elswick was then pinned by Norwalk senior Alex Doughty at 1:59 to fall into the consolation bracket. Elswick will face Port Clinton senior Isaac Akins today, needing three wins to get to districts.

Bellevue freshman Jared Hoy landed in the 170-pound consolation bracket Friday after losing in a 39-second pin to Sandusky senior Kyle Palma on Friday. Hoy will wrestle St. Marys Memorial junior Luke Lemmermen today, needing three wins to advance to districts.

At 182, Bellevue senior Ethan Hartley is in the consolation bracket after a pin at 1:34 against Lima Shawnee freshman Jacob Hixenbaugh. Hartley will face Bowling Green freshman Manny Carrillo today, three wins away from getting to districts.

Zolman explained what each of his wrestlers in the consolation bracket should concentrate on in today’s action.

With some of these guys, this is their first experience with sectionals,” he said. “It’s all or nothing. There’s no sense holding anything back.”

Bellevue junior Jake Weider was eliminated from sectionals after a pair of losses Friday.

Wrestling action will begin at 11 a.m. today at Stroh Center on the campus of Bowling Green State University.
