Interim City Treasurer and former 4th Ward Councilman David Freitag was appointed city treasurer after a meeting of the Bellevue Republican Central Committee Thursday night.
Sandusky County Republican Central Committee Chairman Justin Smith ran the meeting, and the sole purpose was to fill the treasurer’s position left vacant by Donald Berkey being elected Mayor of Bellevue.
Freitag was the only applicant for the position, Smith reported.
The new treasurer committed to run a solid campaign to retain the position in the 2013 election. He is finishing the six-year term vacated by Berkey, which ends Dec. 31, 2013.
“I will fun a good campaign,” Freitag told the committee members who met in the council chambers at Bellevue City Centre.
“I think he’ll be a valuable asset,” Berkey commented.
Former Mayor David Kyle, also a central committee member, too supported the appointment. “He worked with me all my years being mayor,” Kyle told the other members and visitors from the county committee.
Freitag said he has had experience campaigning, having run for Huron County Commissioner in 2006.
He also shared that he has served three terms as the Bellevue 4th Ward councilman, served as chairman of the city budget committee and has been a local businessman for 30 years.
Kyle also pointed out that Freitag was involved in the creation of the current downtown committee.
At the end of the vote, the new treasurer was sworn into office by the man he replaced, who is now Bellevue Mayor.
