Unemployment rates jump in June
Mirroring the statewide trend, local counties experienced a significant increase in the unemployment rate in June.
Here are the latest numbers from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
Sandusky County’s rate went from 8.3 percent in May to 8.8 percent in June. The county’s jobless rate was 9.8 in June of 2010.
Huron County saw its unemployment rate jump from 10.7 percent in May to 11.6 percent in June. The unemployment rate in June 2010 was 12.1 percent.
Seneca County’s unemployment rate jumped from 9.2 percent in May to 10.1 percent in June. The jobless rate in June 2010 was 11.2 percent.
Erie County’s unemployment rate jumped from 7.4 percent in may to 7.1 percent in June. It was 9.3 percent in June 2010.
Unemployment actually dropped in Ottawa County from 9.9 percent in may to 9.7 percent in June. It was 10.9 percent in June 2010.
Ohio’s unemployment rate was 8.8 percent in June, up from 8.6 percent in May. Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 10,600 over the month, from the revised 5,095,000 in May to 5,105,600 in June.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 517,000, up from 508,000 in May. The number of unemployed has decreased by 78,000 in the past 12 months from 595,000. The June unemployment rate for Ohio was down from 10.1 percent in June 2010.
The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 9.2 percent, up from 9.1 percent in May.
The official number does not include those who have stopped looking for work or those who are working part-time but seeking full-time employment.
